Synopsis
An adaptation of OOKA Shohei's novel that depicts the struggles and suffering of Japanese soldiers in the Philippines during the final phase of World War II from the viewpoint of a single private, intensely portraying the horrors of war. This tour de force, with its intense battle scenes, is a shocking but essential statement by veteran director TSUKAMOTO, who also acts in the film. With stunning cinematography and sound design, and an empathetic sense of the madness of combat, TSUKAMOTO's film can stand proudly with ICHIKAWA Kon's 1959 original.
