PROGRAM 1

hospitalité

2010/Japan/96min.
Director : Koji Fukada
A man clutching a poster for a lost bird turns up at a family-run a print shop in downtown Tokyo. Appearing humble, the man moves in and starts working at their factory. The man digs out the family secrets one after another, and begins to behave like the master of the household… In a downtown area where everybody knows their neighbors’ business, the family and those around them are changed by the influence of the stranger, with both comic and tragic touches. Following “Human Comedy in Tokyo,” “hospitalité” was made in collaboration with the performers of the theater company Seinendan. Moreover, the idiosyncratic performance by international actress Kiki Sugino makes the film even more special. A winner of Best Picture Award at the Japanese Eyes section of the 2010 Tokyo International Film Festival. Also screened at Rotterdam (Spectrum section) and Hong Kong International Film Festivals.

PROGRAM 2

Human Comedy in Tokyo

2009/Japan/140min.
Director : Koji Fukada
Set in Tokyo, the story consists of three episodes, “White Cat,” “Photo” and “Right Arm,” which looks at solitude and the possibility of relief with a sharp and clear eye. Like Balzac’s multi-volume collection of novels, “La Comédie humaine,” “Human Comedy in Tokyo” is an interlinked movie where the leading character of one episode appears in another episode in a supporting role, surpassing a mere omnibus story or ensemble play. This is the first feature film featuring the entire cast of Seinendan. Officially selected for the Rome International Film Festival 2009 and the Festival Paris Cinema 2010. The winner of the Cine Drive 2010 Grand Prix.。

PROGRAM 3

LA GRENADIÈRE

2006/Japan/48min.
Director : Koji Fukada
Set in 19th century France. A mysterious lady and her two sons move into the House of Pomegranates which stands on a hill near the Loire. They seldom go out and live quiet happy lives there, but the lady doesn’t have much time left because of a serious disease… The story consists of two episodes from Balzac’s “La Comédie humaine,” ― “La Grenadière” and “Letters of Two Brides.” The film succeeds in reproducing the world of the classic literature with delicate images like an impressionist painting and dialogue carried out on a different time-line. Music played with antique instruments from Balzac’s time is impressive. This remarkably polished film has received enormous acclaim.

Bicycle & Music

2009/Japan/7min.
Director : Koji Fukada
A girl is practicing bicycle riding with her father. A boy who was told off for scrawling graffiti is watching the park from his apartment balcony. He starts making sounds by beating the fence of the balcony. A girl on the next veranda is also beating the fence. Another sound joins from upstairs, and more and more… “Bicycle & Music” is a short film produced in response to a request from the Dutch educational organization, Watch That Sound. Dutch children created impromptu sounds with their favorite instruments in the workshop and recorded sounds in the street for the film. The sounds created in the Netherlands are set to the pictures of Japanese children shot by Fukada, and the completed movie shows the children’s brilliant sensibility. The viewers can see a new possibility of cinematic expression through this work.
