There are a lot of films that get attention at international film festivals, but never shown at theaters in their countries due to social and political situations. At Asian Meeting, we have been showing "films only seen at film festivals", and continue the effort by having 4 films from China, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, with a short film by Shinji Aoyama as a special screening this year. There are Hollywood films but independent films as well. What is the meaning of this phenomenon? We would like you to feel the contrast between films as entertainment and fictional films focusing on the realities of the world. |

The OAFF 2010 will hold special screenings of films directed by Yasmin Ahmad. Yasmin suddenly passed away at the age of 51 in July 2009. Yasmin came to OAFF in 2007 to attend the screenings of “Mukshin”. Due to schedule conflicts, she was not able to attend last year’s screening of “The Convert”. Osaka always had a special place in her heart. Unfortunately, this third screening of her film will be a tribute to her. The lineup of her last works is “Talentime”, “The Convert”, “Mukhsin” and “End of the Daybreak”. “End of the Daybreak”, directed by Ho Yuhang, is Yasmin’s final film as an actress. |
Yasmin Ahmad (Director)
Yasmin Ahdmad was born in Bukit Treh, Malaysia, 1959. After graduating from the Psychology program at a British University, Yasmin worked in Malaysia’s advertising industry. Her creative scripts and interesting TV commercials won a number of prizes at home and abroad. Her second feature, “Slit Eyes” (a.k.a. “Sepet”), won the Best Asian Film Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2005. Her third feature, “Anxiety (a.k.a. “Gubra”), won a Malaysian Academy Award. “Mukhsin” (2006) received the International Jury Grand Prize at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival. |
