- Synopsis
Wansei refers to Japanese individuals who were born in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. Almost all the Japanese in Taiwan were deported to Japan after the Japanese government was defeated in WWII. And as a result, painful separation stories occurred throughout Taiwan...
Requiring 12 years of research and 5 years of filming and production, WANSEI BACK HOME is a tale of friendships and family ties transcending life and death, a tale of discovery of life's true meaning, and a tale of bravery in the face of harsh adversity.
Producer TANAKA Mika (田中實加/Taiwanese name: 陳宣儒), a Taiwan-based artist who has a Wansei grandmother, teamed up with Golden Horse Best Short Film director HUANG Ming-cheng (黄銘正) to create this excellent documentary, which was nominated for the 2015 Golden Horse Best Documentary. The film’s box office was over 32 million NTD in Taiwan – extraordinary for a documentary film.
