- Synopsis
Bao-li has just started 8th grade when he comes to the rescue of Jia-jia, an older girl he immediately falls in love with. She becomes pregnant so he drops out of school to support his new family, but discovers that his mother has gambled away all their savings. Jia-jia admits an affair, and takes their daughter away with her. Hoping to win them back, Bao-li starts selling drugs to make money… Taking an even-handed approach to subject matter that’s frequently given sensationalist treatment, "The Kids" is a refreshing and very well-performed portrait of young people suddenly thrust into a world of adult responsibility.
