Synopsis

Executive produced by HOU Hsiao-hsien, YANG Li-chou’s documentary explores the life of Chen Hsi-huang, the Taiwanese puppet master and eldest son of legendary artist Li Tian-lu, a man who is best known for his starring roles in Hou Hsiao-hsien’s “Dust in the Wind”, “City of Sadness” and “The Puppetmaster”.

Li Tian-lu married into the Chen family in which he became the son-in-law. Under this situation, his eldest son, Hsi-huang, was given the surname Chen but despite the father passing down the art of puppetry to the son, conflict grew between them not least because of Li Tian-lu’s behaviour in private. At the age of 79, Master Chen left the Li family and set up his own troupe, which soon earned recognition all over the world but he still lives in the shadow of his father and, even worse, finds himself in a world where the art of puppetry has declined…

Shot over a number of years, this is a look at some of Taiwan’s most important cultural institutions as well as a farewell to the tradition of puppetry in the country.

Director’s Message/Statement
This is a documentary film about the art and the inheritance of Taiwanese traditional puppetry and the relationship between father and son. In these ten years shooting days, due to control of language and diversity in entertainment, we saw the dying of this puppetry culture. Let’s say goodbye to it in the most glorious way. For the disappearance of traditional Taiwanese puppetry, please take one more look. This may be the last glance.
