Synopsis

When 28-year-old Tokyoite Tsubame Hayakawa is asked by his father to send a document to his older brother Ryushin he is reluctant. Ryushin lives in Taiwan and it has been 23 years since they last saw each other after their mother took Ryushin, leaving Tsubame behind. This, however, is a final request from his father and Tsubame reluctantly accepts it. As he heads to Taiwan, he thinks back on a whole host of memories of the mother who cared for him and used to call him Yanyan, based on the Chinese pronunciation of his name, but who he rejected due to her foreignness.

Director IMAMURA lets loose the camerawork and editing to portray the dredging up of haunting memories of shame and prejudice and some beautiful visuals to tell a unique family tale that stretches from Japan to Taiwan and burrows down into the difficulties of human relations.
