Synopsis

Liakot is a bamboo cutter working in the forests of Sylhet, northeastern Bangladesh. The bamboo he and his crew fell is floated by canal to the Juri River. From the port, Shoheed, Nuru, Hussain, and Shiraz start their 300 km journey toward Dhaka on a giant bamboo raft made from their cargo. They live and work on the raft for more than two weeks for very little pay and at great personal risk. Despite the hardships, their job can provide them with a rare escape from the stresses of poverty, arranged marriages, and personal loss.

Shaheen DILL-RIAZ, a leading documentary filmmaker of Bangladesh, successfully describes the magnificent setting and Bangladeshis’ traditional wisdom to cope with nature and the life stories of the people who have lived there over generations. Following his wide acclaim for “Sand and Water”, “Ironeaters”, and “The Projectionist”, “Bamboo Stories” has already garnered keen interest at film festivals globally. Here, the outstanding visual beauty of Bangladesh and sincere portrayal of its people reflect the dynamism of the cultural landscape.
