When the titular Mariam's husband heads off one winter's morning to town to buy food, he disappears into the remote countryside of Kazakhstan leaving his wife on the farm with their children. With no sign of him coming back, Mariam seeks help with the police but there is no trace of a body, so he cannot be officially declared dead which means Mariam cannot receive state financial support. This leaves Mariam with a farm and young children to look after and no help so she has to dig deep to survive. Just as she establishes her own rule over the landscape, the presence of an old friend taken with her feminine charms seems to offer a way out but her husband soon returns…
Meruert SABBUSINOVA takes the lead in Mariam, a fictionalisation of her own life, created by director URAZBAYEVA who wrote the script and started pre-production within a week of filming a news segment about Sabbusinova for TV news.
