Synopsis

In the 1970s China embarked upon major reforms that awakened its society to a period of massive growth. Looking for ways to announce their presence on the world stage, the nation turned to sport and one of the loudest roars came the women’s volleyball team.

Peter Ho-sun CHAN chronicles 40 years of their achievements in “Leap”, a beautifully lensed sporting drama that retells everything with a near-documentary style thanks to its rich period details and heart-pounding athletic feats thanks to the involvement of real volleyball players. This film is China's 2021 Oscar submission and its dramatic story is as good as anything Hollywood has produced, especially because reality provides a perfect main character. The film’s through-line is the legendary LANG Ping a.k.a. Iron Hammer. An outside hitter in her youth, she became a hero to many thanks to her pivotal playing before her coaching career led to just as many improbable twists and turns that amp the drama and patriotic fervour up even more for what feels like a fairytale ending that could only come from a movie.
