- Synopsis
- Noted documentarian YANG Lina makes her feature film directorial debut with a new precedent in Chinese cinema, an erotic look at female sexuality from a woman's point of view. Fang Lei, a well-off Beijing housewife and mother leads a normal life until she begins to have obsessive dreams featuring a ghost lover. She turns to a Taoist priest for help, then to a Buddhist monastery, where the religious fervour seems similar to the intensity of her dreams... Using semi-improvised dialogue, the film shows the conflicts between capitalism and communism, between urban and rural and it explores the contemporary female lives and desires. "Longing for the Rain" was the official selection at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Taipei Golden Horse Award, and won special mention at Hong Kong International Film Festival.
