HUANG Shang-Ho (黄尚禾) - Synopsis
Guo Jianbo is a 40-something journalist and single-mother who lives together with her mother, Minlan, and daughter Yanting. Three generations of women in the same place but with very different personalities. Jianbo, ostensibly an ice-queen, is full of controlled rage over the many reports of social issues she covers as well as unresolved family conflict she has with her mother Minlan, ostensibly a community organiser and loyalist to the revolution, Mao and the Communist party, who leads other oldies in singing patriotic songs. While conflict simmers away, the two adults do share a lot of pain and despair agony while Jianbo’s daughter grows up and develops her own personality in the cracks of the conflict. The family ties that bind the three together and the nature of the times in which they live in have come to define the three as they each try to find their equilibrium and harmony.
