Chen Shi arrives in early-30s Tianjin with the aim of setting up his own martial arts school. To do so, he must defeat more than half of the city's other schools in formal duels. Along with local disciple Geng Liangchen, he struggles against xenophobic and arrogant local powers in efforts to fulfill his dream. “The Master” portrays conflicts, individual morals and professional standards, while showing us the traditional Chinese Kong Fu practitioners’ special relationship between master and apprentice. Choreographed by director XU, the combat scenes are smooth, varied and intelligently designed. The director also contributes concise and witty dialogue.
