KARA WAI (惠英紅)is the recipient !

The "Osaka Asia Star ★ Award" will be given to a star artist who has played an important role in the Asian film world.

This year's recipient will be the actress Kara WAI (惠英紅) , who started her international career as a kung-fu star actress. She is highly acclaimed for her performances in multiple genres from action to drama.

OAFF 2017 will present MRS K directed by HO Yuhang (何宇恆) as the opening film in which Kara WAI makes a long awaited return to the action genre with the leading role and she also appears in 77 HEARTBREAKS [原諒他77次] directed by Herman YAU (邱禮濤). To welcome her to OAFF, we will host a special talk in which she will discuss her background and career. The Osaka Asia Star award ceremony and special talk will be held at the screening of MRS K.

Kara WAI (Actress)

Kara Wai entered the film industry in 1976 and in 1982 was named Best Actress at the first Hong Kong Film Awards for My Young Auntie [長輩]. Initially known for action-packed roles in such series as The Inspector Wears Skirts [覇王花], she has also gained accolades for drama. Her lead in At the End of Daybreak [心魔](2009) earned Kara a record seven awards, including Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards, Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, Changchun Film Festival, and Vladivostok International Film Festival. In 2014 she won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Rigor Mortis [屍], and was nominated in 2015 for her performance in The Midnight After [那夜凌晨, 我坐上了旺角開往大埔的]. In all, she has appeared in over 140 movies and television series, both in Hong Kong and China.

The Freer & Sackler Galleries of Smithsonian Institution paid their respect to Kara and curated the program “A Salute to Kara” in July 2016 by showing her first and latest film My Young Auntie [長輩] and Happiness[幸運是我]. Kara attended the event in person. Asian CineVision granted the “Asian Media Humanitarian Award” to Kara in recognition for her humanitarian work with health and wellness issues in Asia at the 39th Asian Americ an International Film Festival. Happiness [幸運是我] was screened again and Kara accepted the award in person on July 19, 2016 in New York.
