Synopsis
Ishikawa-cho, Fukushima Prefecture in 1945. Student Kusano Hideo, under the supervision of the army officer Kato, mines uranium ore for nuclear weapon development. One day, he learns from Kato that the war will end soon, which shocks him deeply. After the war, acquisition of land for a nuclear power plant is been promoted in Fukushima, but Hideo refused to accept the plans. The villagers turn a cold shoulder to him and his daughter Aiko. Time passes, and in 2011 when Aiko lives a peaceful life with her family, the Great East Japan Earthquake hits Fukushima...
"FUKUSHIMA" is directed by KANNO Hiroshi from Fukushima, and written by INOUE Junichi (OAFF 2013 "War and a Woman" director). This ambitious film, moving back and forth between past and present, depicts a family's protests and struggles against nuclear energy spanning seventy years, over four generations. An outcry from Rei, Aiko’s granddaughter who is forced to evacuate to Tokyo, leads the family members back to their home, where the light of hope for the next generation shines.
