Pre-Opening

Two pre-opening screenings were held at the ABC Hall, prior to the grand opening of OAFF2013 on March 8: a special screening of "Warriors of the Rainbow I: Sun Flag" from the OAFF2012 Audience Award winning diptych "Warriors of the Rainbow" on March 4; and a preview screening of "Daijoubu 3kumi" on March 5.

March 4 (Mon) Pre-Opening Special Screening of "Warriors of the Rainbow I: Sun Flag"

Director Wei Te-sheng and his "Warriors of the Rainbow I: Sun Flag" were back at OAFF!

With the great news that "Warriors of the Rainbow" will be theatrically released from April in Japan, director Wei Te-sheng appeared on stage before the screening. At the short talk, moderated by ABC broadcaster Junichi Takano, Wei began his speech saying "I'm nervous" to the passionate audience; the theater was packed, just as at the film's Japan premiere last year.

"The film depicts a story of collision and reconciliation, so I would like people to watch both parts," explaining the reason he wanted to release the complete diptych version in Japan. He also said, "I'd like to show this film to as many people as possible. Please tell your friends to watch it if you think it’s worth watching."

Ryuki Kitaoka (right), who appeared in "Warriors of the Rainbow II: Rainbow Bridge", made a surprise appearance and received a great response from the audience.

Q&A with director Wei Te-Sheng

Q: Why did you cast an actor with no acting experience for the main role of Mouna Rudao, instead of a professional actor?

A: Everybody in Taiwan knows Mouna Rudao and the Wushe Incident, so I needed to cast someone that viewers would accept for the indigenous hero. I thought it would lose a sense of reality with a well-known star, so I spent a long time looking for someone who looked like the real Mouna Rudao.

Q: Japanese actors Masanobu Ando and Yuichi Kimura are in the film. How do you see them?

A: As Kojima, who was played by Ando, has a big gap in his personality, I thought it was impossible for a non-professional actor to play the role. For the film, Ando learned the Seediq language from a Seediq descendant who studies in Taiwan. I was really impressed with his professionalism. Kimura complained that he had to play in a lot of battle scenes, but our action director said Kimura has talent.

Q: The fierce battle scenes are impressive. Any difficulties in shooting them?

A: In Hollywood, they shoot action scenes in a studio, but we brought our cameras and all other equipment everywhere in the mountains including places that were too steep to stand. All crew members were injured. In other words, you were not seriously working if you weren't injured.

With his kind attitude and gentle eye, it's hard to imagine that Wei Te-sheng is a director of the intense film "Warriors of the Rainbow", but both his film and his attitude attract viewers. We'd like to thank him for coming to OAFF two years in a row.

"Warriors of the Rainbow" will be in cinemas throughout Japan from April 20 (Sat)

March 5 (Tue) Pre-opening Special Preview Screening "Daijoubu 3kumi"

The latest film by Ryuichi Hiroki, who has directed a wide variety of films, had its special preview screening at OAFF.

Daijoubu 3kumi

"Daijoubu 3kumi" is a film adaptation of Hirotada Ototake's novel based on his experiences, and Ototake himself plays the role of teacher in the film.

After the screening, there was great applause. We got very positive comments from the viewers, such as "I felt like I had a great class for the first time in many years." (Female, forties) and "I was touched. It was much more wonderful than I expected. I want school children in Japan to watch this film" (Female, forties).
