Synopsis

Tokyo has many sights but few are more elusive and eye-catching than the Shinjuku Tiger a.k.a. Tiger Mask.

Dressed in bright colours and wearing accessories like a pink curly wig, flowers, stuffed animals and his distinctive yellow tiger mask, this man is a film fan known to stalk the streets and cinemas of Shinjuku and its Golden Gai district as he pursues good movies, beautiful girls, and delicious sake. His ethos is love and peace and he has spent decades in the district and built a network of acquaintances amidst the people who pass through but just who is this masked man?

This documentary uncovers the origin story of a man determined to enliven a grey world ever since he found his tiger mask at the Inari Kiou Shrine in 1972 and decided to wear it every day. We follow him during his daily routine, part newspaper delivery job, part bar crawl, part history lesson, every moment enlivened by TERAJIMA Shinobu’s narration, Shinjuku Tiger’s reminiscences of Tokyo’s social history, numerous celebrity interviews, vox pops with happy onlookers, and archive footage that show how he became a part of the areas history.
