After winning the Directors Guild of Japan New Director's Award with “German Plus Rain”, Yokohama made her first commercial film, “Bare Essence of Life”, set in Aomori. The film, in Tsugaru dialect, portrays an innocent young man’s first love.

Yojin, who takes care of his farm after the death of his grandfather, is an eccentric man known for his outlandish behavior. One day, he falls in love at first sight with Machiko, a new teacher at a kindergarten where he goes to sell vegetables. Yojin is so excited about his first love that he immediately makes a move on Machiko, but she is bewildered by his intense behavior. In fact, she has come to Aomori to consult with a fortune teller called Kamisama about the missing head of her ex-boyfriend, who died in a car accident.
