Columbus, Indiana is a Midwestern town famous for its multitude of modernist structures designed by the likes of I.M. Pei, John Carl Warnecke, and Richard Meier. It is here amidst the beautiful spaces that a drama unfolds between two strangers, both of whom are architecture buffs going through testing times.
Korean-American Jin travels from Seoul to Columbus after his estranged father, a respected architecture professor, falls into a coma. He encounters Casey, a librarian and lifelong Columbus resident, looking after a troubled mother instead of pursuing her own dreams. The two wander around town together and talk as they find the surrounding architecture provides them with the inspiration to examine their inner troubles and move forward with their lives.
Inspired by the themes and style of Yasujiro Ozu, Kogonada utilises a unique environment and peoples it with characters given depth as we see their troubles, complexities and growth in this rich drama.
