“I Will Make You Mine” is an ode to wistful romance as experienced by three women in Los Angeles. Our story begins when college professor Erika (FUJITANI Ayako) returns to LA with her daughter Sachiko (Ayami Riley TOMINE) to attend her father’s funeral. Meanwhile struggling musician Yea-Ming (Yea-Ming CHEN) is living a FREETER’s life while chasing a fast-fading dream of being a recording artist. Then there is Rachel (Lynn CHEN), a woman who lives in idle luxury with a husband who has cheated on her. Three women who could not be more different have one thing in common: their flawed romantic history with singer-songwriter Goh NAKAMURA (playing himself), a laid back troubadour who has left a huge impression on the women in his lives. With a faltering marriage to Erika, a romantic possibility to fan-girl Yea-Ming, and “the one that got away” to Rachel, his re-emergence in their lives causes each woman to re-evaluate just what they are doing with themselves in a minimalist comedy full of sympathetic characters whose travails believably strike at the heart of adult malaise.
“I Will Make You Mine” is the third and final instalment of the Surrogate Valentine trilogy. If you are worried about coming into this story fresh, it’s not a problem as this can be watched as a stand-alone film and feels fresh thanks to it being told from a female perspective.
