It is 1962 and we are taken to a colonial-era estate in Lucknow, Northern India. From the perspective of little Anjana (Shreeja MISHRA), her beautiful home is a safe space kept in order by her parents, the father being a senior police officer (Gaurav SAINI) and her mother acting as an efficient manager (director Irfana MAJUMDAR herself), but the magic that really charms Anjana comes from the stories of fairies that are told by the family’s indispensable servant, Shankar (Jaihind KUMAR). This man from the countryside helps around the house, especially by building a close relationship with the children, but he yearns for his own home and when his own daughter gets sick…
The strictures of class, caste, and social obligations are keenly observed from the perspective of a child in this historical drama that was self-financed by director MAJUMDAR, filmed at her maternal family’s home, and based on a story written by her mother, Nita KUMAR.
