Drawing upon his own family background for his debut feature, TSANG Hing Weng Eric turns in an assured and unsentimental drama about a family breakup. It begins with an explosive argument between a miserable mother and a distant father who have reached the end of their patience with each other at a winter solstice dinner. When the father waves a knife at the mother and strikes his son, it begins an eight-year wait for the family to reckon with their problems. The arrival of a cousin from the UK who is determined to see everyone gather together for another winter solstice dinner sets in motion a thaw that allows them to rethink their relationships. Powerful naturalistic performances from the cast and TSANG’s deep writing creates a film that displays a perceptive understanding of the difficulty in communication.
