Synopsis

Having left the countryside, Tina (Taki MUMLADZE, the film’s co-writer) has arrived in Tiblisi, the capital of Georgia, and rents a room in the apartment of Megi. The two are opposites in personality, Tina lost in life, jobless, and reliant on her boyfriend, Megi outgoing and determined to escape the country and settle in New York. The plans of both young women don’t quite work out and this gives them time to bond and Tina reveals the secrets that have driven her to the city.

“A Room of My Own” manages to achieve a lot in an intimate character study: present a portrait of a young woman pushing against social boundaries and finding freedom from repression and patriarchy; show what is happening for Georgia’s youngsters in the conservative and patriarchal country. As weighty as these issues are, they feel effortlessly explored with a script that is concise, editing that has scenes flow into each other, and two powerful performances from lead actors.
